Nokia E61i: A Quick Tour

“It’s what computers have become…”

That’s actually the tag line for Nokia’s flagship multimedia smartphone, the N95 — but boy, does it ever apply to the Eseries as well! I’ve stayed up all night long tinkering with my brand-new E61i, and while it’s maybe too soon for a final verdict so far it looks like my snazzy new handset combines the best features of my BlackBerry and former TyTN, with a little bit of hiptop ease-of-use thrown in for good measure.

Here’s what I’ve discovered so far…

Screenshot

Wonder of wonders, I can do screen grabs again!

While there’s no built-in utility for this on Symbian handsets, Antony Pranata has produced an excellent bit of freeware called Screenshot which does the trick. Shown here is an actual screen shot of his Screenshot app — how is that even possible?!

Another feat I’ve never been able to accomplish with any smartphone and my Mac is the archiving of SMS messages. But thanks to Ali over at the unofficial E61i blog I got hipped to another fine (and free!) program called SMS Export.

And with that one-two punch I’ve bagged the best features of Jeyo’s Mobile Companion for free. Take that, Windows Mobile!

Access Points

One of the many things that irked me about my TyTN was the way in which it connected to data networks. Unbeknownst to me, my first few days of browsing the wireless web were charged at full data rates through Fido’s internet service, even though I had the WiFi radio turned on and connected to my home network the whole time!

That’ll never happen again (hopefully) thanks to Nokia making my handset have to ask me how it connects to the web each and every session. Oh, and by the way, all of those Fido data settings were delivered to my smartphone auto-magically thanks to the Nokia’s free Phone Configurator service.

BB Connect

I didn’t have quite so much luck with BlackBerry Connect. The screen you see above is the product of about four hours worth of cursing and frustration. After downloading two incompatible copies of the software directly from Nokia I found a version perfectly optimized for my phone tucked away in Symbian’s trojan horse…

Catalog

… Their Download! app — the closest thing like it on any other handset is the hiptop’s Catalog (click on “overview” then “catalog” on this page for more info). With a speedy WiFi connection this is a great way to get software on your handset super-quick!

What other gems does Symbian Series 60 have tucked away in this diminutive device? Stay tuned…

  5. Hey Andre, if you read another E61i-related post entitled What’s On My E61i you’ll see that I’m now using that very same app.

May I humbly suggest that a little more context with your comment would be helpful. I almost mistook it for spam and deleted it before I checked the link and found it to be legit.

    Nice blog yourself, BTW… :-)
