Public Humiliation

I paid a visit to The Rex Hotel last night, to enjoy some big band jazz and a tribute to arranger Ron Collier.

An interesting tone for the evening was set when, after the first number, the bandleader demanded the immediate exit of some people who were chatting rather loudly in a corner of the bar. Their eventual vacating of the premises drew cheers from some, but I was none too impressed. After all, they were there before the band even showed up, and more importantly, public humiliation of potential converts won’t do anything to help a once-popular art form that’s now pretty much on life support.
