Saw That Coming

WARNING: Spoilers ahead… Read at your own peril!

So the other night I did a bit of due diligence as a wannabe indie filmmaker and watched Saw on DVD. No disrespect for the filmmakers here, but I just didn’t see what the big deal was.

The movie opens with two strangers chained to opposite ends of a large room, with a dead body lying face down between them. I immediately thought “Well, that’s their captor, then. He’s not really dead, and he’ll spring to life at the end of the movie.” … And I was absolutely right!

I guess the fact that one of the characters saws his own leg off at one point is supposed to be a big deal, except that it’s not really believable and a similar act was played out much more horrifically in Audition; watch it for yourself if you don’t believe me!

The companion website for the film is much better, with lots of creepy imagery and Flash animations—that is, until you get tired of trying to figure out where to click to get to the next screen and give up on it.

I’ll see if things improve any when Saw II – Electric Boogaloo gets released on DVD this week, but I’m not getting my hopes up.

P.S. In case you were wondering, any sequel that regurgitates the exact title of the original movie and sticks a “2” on the end of it must also be followed by the words “Electric Boogaloo”, as per this cinematic precedent.

Now you know!
