After proclaiming that “nobody reads anymore”, Apple wants to go all iTunes on the publishing industry.

People put their hands out and let him put the handcuffs on them… The same thing now is happening with the publishing industry.

It would most certainly suck for end users too…

  1. But what’s the best alternative? It’s all very well complaining about Apple’s solutions. But you need to be saying something like this…

    Don’t buy into Apple’s publishing solution, because (insert product/service) is better because it is (insert *valid* reason).

    If you can’t say something similar to the above sentence should you really be saying anything at all?

    I own a print company and I can tell you that the print industry is on its last legs, there is far to much waste and far too much expensive involved in producing printed material.

    However what is the alternative right now? The open source alternatives could make a play for the print industry (I’m talking about HTML and PDF), but seriously what are the chances that those particular pieces will fall into place thanks to open source efforts? Zero!

    So you tell me Andrew, who is going to save the publishing industry from falling apart? What do you propose as a solid, beneficial and working alternative to print? Honestly, I’d really like to know your thoughts on this matter.

      Thanks for the comment. Here’s where I’m coming from: I don’t mean to sound harsh, but it’s not my job to save the publishing industry.

      Sorry things aren’t going well for your print company — which I’d love to hear more about, btw — but what I consider to be my job is to make sure end users know what they’re getting into should they decide to spend $500 on a shiny Apple tablet to read car magazines on the toilet (or hopefully something more noble than that).

      The publishing industry had it’s chance with Peanut Press for the Palm OS 10 years ago, and until the Kindle seemed unwilling to make any significant move in the ebook space.

      From where I’m sitting it seems to me that the Kindle is a dud, yet I can’t any reason for an Apple tablet other than to steal business from it. Ultimately, though, I believe both will fail — just as DRM failed on the MP3 and DVD.

      Oh, and depending on where you look, PDFs and the like are actually doing pretty well!
